Adkins was raised by a single young mother in different working-class areas of London. When she was a kid she was a fan of pop songs of the day and was taught to play the guitar as well as the clarinet. But it wasn't until her early teens, when she began to discover the rhythm and blues vocalist Etta James and other mid 20th century performers, that she began to consider pursuing a career in music. She was in a secondary school for the visual and performing arts, which was funded by the government. One of her friends posted songs Adkins had composed onto Myspace. She was soon discovered by record labels and signed an agreement with XL Recordings in 2006.
